Couple leaves comforts of South for city that never sleeps
March 26 2012 by Shawn Hendricks, BR Managing Editor

Kevin and Kristi Cabe love the view from Sunset Park in Brooklyn, N.Y. The park overlooks a backdrop of tall buildings and skyscrapers in Jersey City, Manhattan and Staten Island. Further in the distance one can see Queens and the Bronx.

“It’s really an amazing place to stand and see it all,” writes Kevin on his blog that documents the couple’s recent move to the city.

It’s a much different view for the Southerners. Both have North Carolina ties and were living in Knoxville, Tenn., a few weeks ago before uprooting to the Big Apple. The couple packed up their possessions, sold their car, quit their jobs and moved from a “comfortable life” in Tennessee to Brooklyn.

They now live in a one-room apartment in Bay Ridge, a community of 70,000 people packed within two square miles. As Mission Service Corps missionaries with the North American Mission Board (NAMB) the couple is working alongside Cornerstone Church in Bay Ridge – the only Baptist church in their neighborhood – to help lead locals to Christ. The church, which launched Sept. 11, 2011, is part of NAMB’s Send North America effort to start new churches in cities across the country.

The Baptist State Convention of North Carolina also is involved in several of these Send North America partnerships that include New York, Toronto and Boston.

“It was simply about being obedient [to God],” said Kevin, who spent most of his life growing up in Canton, N.C.

“We had great jobs. We were comfortable. We were secure.”

Kevin has served on staff in the past at Biltmore Baptist Church in Arden and also helped start Pinnacle Church in Canton. He attended Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary in Wake Forest. Kristi also attended there and graduated. But the couple didn’t meet until after Kevin moved to Knoxville in 2008. There, he served as student minister at Belmont Heights Baptist Church. The Cabes married in May of 2011.

Kevin and Kristi Cabe, as Mission Service Corps missionaries with the North American Mission Board, is helping with Cornerstone Church. They are coordinating volunteer teams and hitting the pavement to tell others about Jesus and the church.

Kevin first felt called to New York City about two years ago. While on a six-hour layover in Newark, N.J., as he and a mission team returned from an overseas trip to Poland, the team set out to explore the city that never sleeps.

“It was just the enormity … the high rises, knowing that there are millions of people here,” said Kevin, noting there are more than 170 languages represented in the city.

“And knowing that in the South we have churches on every corner. But up north that is not the case.”

Though Kevin concedes there are some “church buildings” in Bay Ridge, there are few congregations that identify themselves as “evangelical” or those who put their sole trust in Jesus Christ for salvation.

“Our goal [is] to help a church as well as lead people to Christ,” he said.

The move has required some adjustment.

Without a vehicle, the Cabes must walk or take the subway to get where they need to go in the city. The people “talk fast” and the cost of living is much higher. As Mission Service Corps missionaries the Cabes are endorsed by NAMB, but they are responsible for raising their own support.

“We were fortunate to raise enough support that will keep us here for several months,” Kevin said.

“But we are going to need jobs … which is good because it will allow us to meet more people.”

Right now the couple has applications out and are actively looking for employment.

The Cabes are working with Nathan Tubbs, a bi-vocational pastor of Cornerstone Church and a 7th-grade science teacher. The church meets in a hotel with about 25 people who attend each week.

As an associate pastor, Kevin leads worship, works with youth and leads a small group. Kristi’s main role with the church involves leading a women’s ministry.

Both have helped Tubbs coordinate volunteer teams and lead groups to hand out flyers and information about Cornerstone. Some of the flyers can be found hanging in stores and in other places around the neighborhood.

“We were afraid that people in the local businesses would be like ‘we don’t want this,’ but they were really friendly and really receptive,” Kristi said.

“Being from the South you always hear that people from up north are rude, and I haven’t experienced that since I’ve been here.”

While riding a subway, Tubbs shared on his cell phone how the Cabes are an answer to four years of prayer.

“Having another couple come in and help out, [Cornerstone’s] ministry has been tripled,” Tubbs said.
“We’re meeting people who have never been in a church before, and no one in their family has been in a church before.”

Tubbs described the work in Brooklyn as being similar to ministry among an “unreached people group” overseas.

According to one study, 83 percent of New York City residents affiliate with some form of organized religion, but only 3 percent claim to trust Christ alone for salvation. “We’re about 97 percent lost,” Tubbs said. “We’re right on the verge of what the International Mission Board would call a people group that’s two percent lost … unreached.”

Overall, the work is going to take time and persistence. “The relationships here are incredibly slow,” Tubbs said. “It takes days, months, years to have the opportunity to share with someone.”

“That’s why a couple like Kevin and Kristi Cabe are so important to our ministry because they come and they stay … and are going to see the long-term benefits of doing that.”

God is Moving in NYC!

Finally, a chance to breathe. We've been in NYC for 26 days now. The first two weeks we were here we tried to get acclimated to the area. The last two weeks we've worked with four mission teams. We've had college students from the University of Georgia, University of Kentucky, Alabama University, Auburn University, Alabama State, University of Montevallo, and University of Hawaii. The groups have spent time working in Shore Road Park and picking up trash along 3rd and 5th avenues in Bay Ridge. The people here are noticing! With out fail, people stop us and ask us why we're doing what we're doing. Its been great to hear these college students tell the locals, "Hey, we're from Hawaii (or any of these schools) and we're here to serve in your community. We're working with Cornerstone Church." Anyone who talks to these students receives a card with our church information on it. The people in the community are amazed that people come from all over to literally pick up trash and sweep sidewalks. Its been incredible for us to see the response.

I'm literally blown away how God is using us here and how God is at work here. We're seeing visitors come through our church doors and we're meeting new people. I had the chance to attend a worship conference in Brooklyn. It was a small intimate group but it was a great time to reflect as well. God has called us to serve people and to lead people. What a sweet time that was and I made some connections with some people in the city. I'm thankful I had the opportunity to go.

We're really enjoying getting to know the people in our church. We've attended small groups and its neat to hear their stories. Some are native to Brooklyn and some have come from other places. None the less, the stories are incredible how God has brought people into this community. We have a couple that randomly showed up to church b/c of a crazy woman. This couple was walking the street w/ their family. A lady was literally acting crazy on the street and they stopped to see what was going on. One looked to the business beside them and saw a flyer for the church…the next week they showed up, and they haven't left! They are a sweet family that serves faithfully in our church. Another couple noticed the people serving in the park and decided to come to church…they've not left either!

It's been exciting here the last little bit. On March 15th, I was sitting at my computer on Facebook about ready to call it a night. A friend jumped on their and said, "Nice article in the USA TODAY! I'm praying for your ministry." I asked, "Well thanks for praying but what are you talking about?" A few weeks prior, thanks to the Baptist and Reflector, they ran an article about Kristi and I going to NYC. The Tennessean (Nashville's newspaper) contacted us about doing an interview. The reporter must have been a contributor to the USA TODAY because the same article was sent to the USA TODAY. You can view the article here. http://www.usatoday.com/news/religion/story/2012-03-13/baptist-mormon-missionaries/53553360/1

Last night, we had a meet and greet with our church family. It was an opportunity for our church family to get to know us and see our new place. We had 16 people in our one bedroom apartment! Talk about a tight fit but it was a lot of fun.

I'll leave you with an INCREDIBLE story that happened at our church yesterday. This past weekend we had a couple from Alabama and a retired businessman from another part of Alabama visit NYC to check out Cornerstone Church. At church, near the end of the service a visiting couple showed up. They looked like they were unsure of where to go. I got up and greeted them and told them we were finishing up our service and invited them to have a seat. The gentleman was in a suit and his friend was dressed very nice as well. I'm wondering to myself, how did they hear about our service? I'm glad they found it but i'm thinking what's their story. Once the service was over, the businessman from Alabama stood up and said, "can i say something?" He then said, "I want to thank "Joe" (Name changed for sensitive reasons) for being here today." He was referring to the couple that came in at the end of the service. w "Joe" was my cab driver from the airport to the hotel. I shared with "Joe" about this church and invited him here today. "Joe" and I began to talk about the Bible and he had a lot of questions. He shared with me that he has began studying the Bible. "Joe" is from Africa and he is a Muslim." Can I tell you that the air in our church was sucked out and literally in awe of how God had worked. The look on everyones face was priceless! "Joe" left with some great books about Christianity and a new Bible. I don't think I'll forget that story for a long time.

God is at work in NYC and we would love for you to be a part. You can be a part by getting involved here. You can be involved by supporting Kristi and I prayerfully. You can be involved by supporting Kristi and I financially through the North American Mission Board. Regardless, just get involved! God is a work.

Prayer Request:

Pray that we would find jobs

Pray that God would send us churches/individuals to partner with us

Pray for our work with Cornerstone Church of Bay Ridge

Pray that the people of Bay Ridge would connect with our church

Pray for us as we serve

Blog Update!!

Well it's been some time since we updated you on all thats going on. It's because we have been SO busy. We moved into our apartment on March 1, and so far, we love it here! The weather when we first arrived was pretty cold. The last few days it's been pretty warm here. We're hoping we missed the winter here. We're one block from anything we need...restaurants, hardware store, pharmacy, grocery store, etc. We're also two blocks away from the subway that can get us anywhere in the city. We're walking everywhere. We miss our cars!

We have a mission team here from Athens, GA this week. We've been hard at work with them. When they arrived on Saturday, we ate Lebanese food together.

Our Saturday routine for the church is to take a car service to New Utrecht Ave and rent a UHaul van. We take it back and park it near our house. Sunday morning, we leave at 7:45 and go to the storage area and pick up our equipment and then to the hotel where we have the services. We set up, have a worship service, tear down, load it up, unload it at the storage place, put gas in the UHaul and then drop it off. Then have a car service to take us back to our house. Its a time consuming process but that's how we pull off Sundays.

The rest of the week…we posted flyers of the church in local businesses and restaurants. Kristi and I felt like the people were very receptive to us posting these. We even had a muslim woman allow us to post the sign in her window! We went on a prayer walking tour of Brooklyn which was nuts! Literally, we walked through an American/Italian area (where we live), Arabic community, Mexican community, Chinese community, Hasidic Jewish, and Russian community. All very close to each other. It's eye opening the ethnic diversity we are seeing. There are 100-200 college students from Alabama, Georgia, and Kentucky in the city for passportNYC12. So, we had 30-40 people helping in the park yesterday cleaning up. We've not had time to breathe really but its going well.

Prayer Request:

Please pray we find jobs that will allow us to stay here.

Pray that God would send us prayer partners

Pray the God would send us financial partners

Pray for Cornerstone Church

Pray for the people of Bay Ridge

* If you are interested in partnering with us in any way….please email us. Kabeman606@aol.com Also, we'd love for you to send us emails or encouraging notes. If you're interested in our address please email for it. We didn't want to post it for all of the web to see.

Below are pictures that Kristi and I both have taken. At the bottom is our a few pictures of our apartment. I wanted to explain the first picture because its an incredible view. This picture was taken from Sunset Park in Brooklyn. From this view...you could see Jersey City, NJ, Manhattan, Staten Island, Brooklyn, in the distance Queens and the Bronx. It really is an amazing place to stand and see it all.

Made it to Brooklyn

We packed up everything last Tuesday and began our trek up on Wednesday. We left early that morning. We traveled the outskirts of DC, and went through Baltimore and Philadelphia. We made a few wrong turns but we ended up staying the night in Staten Island. Thursday morning, we headed into Brooklyn. We picked up our keys and headed to our new apartment. We really like our new place. We're one block from anything we need and two blocks from the subway! We're really liking this community. We also made a trip to IKEA in Brooklyn. We really like that place too!

Friday night, the North American Mission Board hosted a NY/NJ Church Planter's Spouse Getaway. So, we headed to New Jersey around 3:00 on Friday. We hoped the R train to the World Trade Center Site and hoped on the Path Train to Jersey City. We had a great time there and got to meet some other church planters and hear from Vice President of NAMB, Aaron Coe. He really challenged us and encouraged us. Kristi and I enjoyed our time there.

Saturday, with Kristi's parents here, we ventured into the city and saw some sights. We went to Macy's, Times Square, Reece's, Hershey's, and Rockefeller Center. We had pizza from Nino's Pizza in Bay Ridge. That was probably the best pizza i've ever had.

Sunday, we experienced Cornerstone Church. This is the church we'll be working with. We were so excited to be there. (Kevin has been sick since we've been here) Nathan did a great job with the sermon and C.David knocked it out with worship. We're so excited about working with this church and seeing all that God will do in and through us in Bay Ridge. Well, thats enough for now. We're heading to a small group soon. Pictures will follow of our apartment and Bay Ridge.
